- Description
- SMEs in Abu Dhabi are critical for the development of the UAE’s economy and are essential for achieving economic diversity and movement away from dependence on oil and gas. Entrepreneurs play a crucial part in this process and their characteristics and skills can have a significant impact on developing organizational dynamic learning and innovation capabilities. Those capabilities in turn not only support the achievement of competitive advantage, but they also enable SMEs to renew and deploy their resource base to secure sustainable financial and non-financial performance in the face of rising competition in turbulent markets. The current research proposes a comprehensive framework that simultaneously addresses the role of the individual, dynamic capabilities and firm performance. Specifically, this research investigates the relationship of tenacity, passion, new resource skill and self-efficacy, as significant entrepreneurial characteristics, with an organization’s dynamic learning and innovation capabilities and in turn the performance of firms within the SME sector. The proposed relationships are assessed using a survey questionnaire that is circulated to 378 SMEs in the wholesale, retail and trade, vehicle repair, construction and manufacturing sectors in Abu Dhabi. The collected data was assessed through descriptive statistical analysis and Partial Least Squares method for analysis. The results of the investigation support a strong positive impact of self-efficacy on dynamic learning and innovation capabilities, while the entrepreneurial characteristics of tenacity, passion and new resource skill showed non-significant effects. Dynamic learning capability and dynamic innovation capability in turn were found to have a significant and positive effect on SME performance. According to the outcomes of the research, emphasis must be placed on developing, nurturing and directing entrepreneurial characteristics to increase the effectiveness of organizational dynamic innovation and learning capabilities for enhanced organizational performance in SMEs in Abu Dhabi.
